Welcome to the build log. There are several scattered threads on this boat but no build thread, so hopefully this will serve as a depository for not only a build of this beautiful model, but a place for discussion as well. As of today, my boat is on a UPS truck after being located on a shelf in a warehouse somewhere around Salt Lake City Utah. I fell in love with the pictures of this finely detailed boat and just knew it was what I wanted to spend countless hours sailing against other 1 meter sized boats in our club. This will not be a closet queen.she will be sailed hard and often. Ok.here is a screen shot of the site I ordered the boat from.my 1st question to the guys that know what comes with this kit is.does it have any electrics.i.e. Radio and servos included?
The way I read the print at the bottom of the screen is. I don't want the radio anyway, but am ready to place an order with tower for servos and crew. Tower has free shipping but that offer ends today.
Hello Windwarrior.yes I did get this new in the box at: It was the only one they had and the pic above shows none in stock right after I placed my order. I paid what it shows to the door.no shipping costs. I know of another on ebay. It's also NIB but in Hong Kong and the dude must be smoking crack.$759.99 plus $150.00 shipping. I will be starting on this baby next week.I plan to beef her up inside to prevent the known hull fracturing problems and add a crew.
I look forward to seeing your build too.you are going to build yours.right? While waiting on the boat.I went ahead and ordered servos and crew from Tower so they will be here about the same time. I will use the Hitec HS-322HD Standard Heavy Duty Karbonite Gear for the rudder.a good little servo at $9.99 ea. That I use in a lot of my boats. The recommended sail servo for this boat was the Futaba S3801.like the boat.it is discontinued, but it can still be had at a premium price if you can find one.
I found a very close Hitec replacement and here are the specs for the two. Hitec The HS-765HB sail arm servo has up to 140 degrees of travel and comes with a Heavy Duty 4.5 inch arm. With its dual ball bearing supported output shaft the HS-765HB will provide years of reliable service for your R/C sailing applications to 2 meters. Specifications Motor Type: 3 Pole Bearing Type: Dual Ball Bearing Speed (4.8V/6.0V): 0.28/0.23 Torque oz./in. (4.8V/6.0V): 153/183 Size in Inches: 2.32L x 1.14W x 1.96H Weight ounces: 3.88 Futaba The S3801 servo has rotational range of 125 degrees. Metal output gear, the other gears are nylon. Specifications Motor Type: 3 Pole Bearing Type: Dual Ball Bearing Speed (4.8V/6.0V): 0.30/0.26 Torque oz./in.
(4.8V/6.0V): 156/194 Size in Inches: 2.32L x 1.14W x 1.97H Weight ounces:? (They are the same size, the Hitec is slightly faster with 15 extra degrees of travel. The Futaba has/had slightly better torque ratings and a metal output gear. The metal gear may or may not be necessary in this application but the price is pretty good for the Hitec $39.99 @ Tower.) The crew is the Tamiya 1/20 Pit Crew Figure Set.

Let's talk about the deck and hull reinforcements - I know you are handy with the fiberglass so that should be a no brainer for you.
The Yamaha is like the Seawind and most other boats made out of ABS - too thin for heavy weather and regular sailing. There are a few areas that can be reinforced and then she is ready for the heavy stuff.
As you know, I sail mine almost every week, weather permiting. With the mods I've made, I have had no issues over the years since I got it. I never get tired of sailing it. It is so true to scale, and with the crew on it, I am like a kid with his first electric train. Very cool boat - Boomer. I got started on the build this weekend in between the Braves games.
The instructions call for the boat stand to be built 1st, followed by the keel, but I will get to those later. 1st up I glassed inside of the hull, around the keel box. I used 4 overlapping pieces of 2oz glass cloth and a generous amount of Zpoxy resin.after roughing up the area to be glassed with some 100 grit sandpaper. I decided to add a cold water soaked wet t-shirt under the hull, while the resin fired off, in case it got hot enough to deform the ABS.it worked great. The reinforcment is needed due to the stress placed to the area by the keel.
There are reports of cracks forming around the stock box and this easy fix should prevent that from happening. Dick.the hull/deck is formed as one piece and as boomer says, the servo tray installs fully assembled.very slick piece of engineering. This has to be the 1st model I ever assembled that you did the decals first.but that is the way the instructions are set up. I assume that it is done now while all the breakables are still off the boat? The bad thing about sticker type decals is that once they touch the boat, that's where they stay.but.In case you haven't tried this with Vinyl sticker type decals.take a slightly soapy water solution and mist it on the decal target first. This will allow you to move it around or even remove it before it sets.
After it's in position.press firmly, working from the middle out to remove excess water and air bubbles. Once you press it down it's not going to come up so make sure it's where you want it. I use my bare finger lightly then press hard with my finger inside a piece of cloth to get more pressure and remove water. If you haven't pressed it down yet, you may be able to get it back up with a razor blade carefully placed under a corner to get you a starting edge to pull on.

The hardest decal for me was the bottom trim stripe. As you know, I opted to do my own graphics and to hold off on going the full race boat graphic scheme. I have all the race decals in a sealed box, should I decide to go to the race boat graphics.
This is such a good looking boat, I couldn't bring myself to put all the sponsorship decals on the boat. I have toyed with the idea of someday repainting the boat a different color. I saved a picture of a Yamaha that had a custom paint scheme - looks pretty good.
