In another thread I read about the Kia Global Information System being a paid repair manual service, at $19 for 72 hours I thought perhaps I'd look for an alternative. Chilton and Haynes don't appear to have one. I looked on Amazon and found a PDF version by a company called SoftAutoManuals for $49.99, reviews for their manuals are extremely sparse and not very positive. Around 15 years ago I did a lot of my own mechanical work but currently am not able to because I live in an apartment complex that frowns upon car work in the parking lot and also I don't have a lot of tools, however it would be good to have a manual for general information when talking to a dealer or other repair shop plus it might give me the bug to get going again with a few repairs; if I can find a place to do so. From what I've gathered so far the Kia Global Information system may be the best option, but expensive at over $6 a day for three days.

(Disclaimer - I do not work for TradeBit or have any financial interest in the company. I'm just a satisfied customer who wants to share this along with the index I typed up.) This is copied from an earlier reply I made to another reader. It deals with my 2013 but they have all years available.

Your 2011 link is: In January, I ordered a Service/Repair Manual for my 2013 Soul 1.6 online at TradeBit. Cost was $10 (PayPal) and it was a quick and easy download. You get 2 books - one for the 1.6 and one for the 2.0. Each are over 1300 pages. The problem is - there is no index, so finding stuff is frustrating and time-consuming. So, I started slowly whittling away at it and typed up an index for the 2013 1.6 book.

Manual

I'm sharing it for free if anyone else has the same manual. You can PM me and I will mail my index to you. This is a quick 5 - 10 minute download and paid through PayPal.

You get 2 books, one for the 2013 Soul 1.6 and one for the 2.0 - each over 1300 pages. There are books available for other years too if you go to the link and start searching. If you get one for a different year, make sure it's the same cover since there are other types of manuals offered. Just go to the Search at the top of the page shown and type in 2012 Kia Soul or 2011 Kia Soul and you will get the lists of manuals available.

Some different years and manuals with electronics sections are between $10-$15. PM me if you have a question. Hope this helps. The reason you won't see many manuals for modern cars is that to work on them nowadays you need training and a lot of electronic equipment. Most folks have little understanding or interest in how to repair a car or even how it works. When i was young any man who could not fix his own car was looked down on by others.

Plus they were easy to fix and a book could explain most everything. Add to that the ability of most folks to do simple repairs on their own and you can see why the market has changed.

Hayne's manuals give you step by step instructions on how to do just about any task on a car. It doesn't take any training other than lefty-loosy righty-tighty to fix just about anything on a car that is covered by a Haynes manual. Chiltons are pretty much the same as well.Note that I also said that most folks have little interest in learning to fix their cars. Sure some cars have items that many folks could fix. You still need test equipment and also tools to do this.

Most are not willing to spend the money or take the time to get this knowledge. This means that the market for books is limited and not worth the time and money needed for the publishers to do it. Most information is only available on computer discs or services like Alldata.

I also think that fixing today's cars is much more complicated that 'Lefty loosy, righty tighty'. I dunno, I've seen this before in another context. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, someone somewhere decides people don't need to fix their own car or change their own tire, generally because THEY don't want to fix their own car or change their own tire so they stop supplying the rest of us with the resources we need to do those things. And most likely THEY don't want to do it because they can afford to have someone else do it or because they don't know 'left loosy, righty tighty' or because they hurt themselves with a ratchet handle years ago. And proper documentation would allow people to know more about their cars then 'gas goes in here'.

Remember all those people who show up on this forum looking for a spare tire? They DO know how to change one and even of they can afford to pay somebody else to do it they want the option. We're not quite as dumb as some folks would like to believe.

Besides some of us get a warm fuzzy feeling from fixing something that's broken. The Tradebit manual does read like an actual manual as published by Kia. (There's also a UK seller on eBay. It seems to be the same manual, at least I found one of his sample pages in the Tradebit copy I just bought.) Very nice, I'm not ever going to rebuild the engine, but sooner or later may have to take a door apart or something like that. As pnoman said, there's no index, but (perhaps depending on your pdf reader, I use PDF-Xchange) there's a 'thumb index' that will take you to the appropriate chapter, at least. More complete and specific than Haynes tends to be, but Haynes tells you how to do things if you don't have the official factory tools like 'Oil Seal Installer 00'.

Interestingly, the eBay seller has a lengthy disclaimer saying that the manual is licensed under GNU/GPL. Which, if true, means that anyone who has it can legally distribute copies. It's hard to know for sure unless someone has access to an official Kia copy to compare, since at least the Tradebit copy omits the 'front matter' you'd expect in a book (title page, publishing date, and any potential copyright notices) and the page numbers don't appear original. If it's not true, both sellers would be violating the copyright. Kia is almost certainly aware of these sales, and presumably has not accused the sellers of copyright violation.
